Apparently the new motorized excavator is soo complex, it is causing TLG to do some really drastic measures.  Shocked

I have checked Shop At Home and it seems that TLG has pulled the excavator from its store! I think this is due to some major complains about the raising of the boom and other problems.

Here's a quote from someone from Eurobricks regarding his model which has a lot of problems; so much so TLG ask him to sent it back to them for TLG to check.

    Quote
I got a call from a very kind and friendly lady at Lego UK today, and this is what I was told.

    - The Lego designers in Denmark are aware of the problems with the Excavator
    - They have pulled 50 (fifty) models from storage and built them. ALL 50 had problems
    - At first the models work OK, then the performance drops over time (as with mine and others)
    - They think it might be transmission related but are not 100% sure
    - Problems were not noticed during design phase
    - Not a high population of users have complained about problems (I guess that doesn't mean they don't have issues, just not reported them)
    - They think it could be a bad batch of models

    - They hope to have full results in 7 days
    - There will be a redesigned model with fixes, hopefully within a few months (3~ months)

I have been given a full refund on mine now which is great news. I am taking mine apart tonight and sending it off. I have to say Lego have been very good about this situation and they are working very hard to trying to solve the problems. For now though, I'd rather have the money back until it is fixed.

    Hope this helps.

I wonder if our local distributor got any word from TLG regarding the excavator?

As for my own excavator, yes it does have some problems (mainly too slow raising lowering the main boom), but I prefer to keep my 'antique' set  Grin Besides, the amount of useful parts you get from the excavator is amazing!

i think the problem could be the main boom which like it loosing its power from the m motor....

Below is the quote from LEGO Technic product team...
    Source: technicbricks.blogspot.com

"The LEGO group and the LEGO Technic product team is aware that a number of consumers are experiencing problems with their 8043 motorized excavator.
It's really important to us that our products are of the highest quality and we are currently doing everything we can to solve this issue. As soon as we heard about this, we immediately got in contact with some of these consumers to learn from their models.
These models are right now being tested and investigated in any possible way.
We are working very hard to come up with a solution, which we will communicate as soon as possible.

    Best regards
    The LEGO Technic product team"

I have dissembled my excavator already. Half-way dissembling it I attached an XL motor at the place where usually there is an M-motor to raise/lower the boom. To my surprise the XL motor had no problems raising and lowering the boom due to its high torque.  Shocked

I think we have hit the limit of what the M-motor can do and TLG should have used an XL motor instead. But the XL motor is quite big and 2 of them won't fit into the top turret.

I am curious to see what are the developments for this excavator now it has been removed from TLG's Shop at Home. I have read TLG would revise the design and issue a 'service pack' for those currently with the excavator. We'll see how it goes.

Elindzul, you can still buy it since it is an amazing set. My only worry is that TLG will withdraw the model from the market all together and then it is impossible to obtain one!

Paanjang16 bro, from which set you get the XL Motor from  Cheesy

So far there is only 3 sets which has the XL motor, 2 of them Technic and 1 Creator. There are the 8275 Motorized Bulldozer (2 nos), 4958 Monster Dino (1 motor) and 8258 Crane Truck (1 motor). The reason 8258 has an XL motor is because it has a fairly complex gearbox and ALOT of gears to pass through before it can operate its 2 linear actuator.

XL motor is powerful yes, but bulky and space consuming.

In places where there is Shop At Home you can order the XL motor individually at USD 10 per pop.

I wonder how would TLG knows those who currently owned the excavator to be sent a 'service pack'.

The way I see it, IF they actually come out with a service pack, "probably" the buyer needs to contact TLG to get it, instead of the other way round. Let's see. If it is just a change in the manual, proably they would have an electronic version uploaded (that means the version you hare holding would be PRICELESS!!). :O

At least we have something to prove TLG's mistake if we keep the instruction for years. Grin

I was thinking if they do come out with a service pack, I wonder what they will ask for? After all we do need to prove to them that we bought the excavator, otherwise anyone can ask for the service pack.

I have never request a piece from TLG before, so I do not know the procedure.

If they come out with addendum I think they will include an addendum sheet the new sets. Like the Technic destroyer droid there is an addendum instruction sheet in addition to the base instruction sheet.

Come to think of it, the set I am having now is now a rare set. I wonder how much will a MISB set costs in a few years if TLG issues a new set or totally pull it from the market  Huh?
