The tow truck business in Lego Town is a highly competitive environment. Every year new tow truck technology emerged to lessen the time and work required to transport a stricken vehicle to the nearest workshop. Safety is paramount in this business, hence the constant push for better and safer towing rigs.

Among the newest tow truck at the time of its launch back in 1993 was the Rescue Rig. It does not have the usual tow hook and boom of conventional tow trucks. Instead it features a special hook which attaches itself to the vehicle, creating a rigid hook where the rescue rig can lift the car without damaging the car itself. This method is safer as the car is lifted at the tow hook and not on any part of the car.

    Set name: Rescue Rig
    Set number: 6670
    Theme: Classic Town
    Year Released: 1993
    Number of parts: 114

    BOX PICTURE

Below is the box picture of the rescue rig. The box is blue in color instead of the Classic Legoland yellow box. Picture taken from PEERON.

    INSTRUCTIONS

The instruction is printed on a single sheet of paper which is folded several times. It is slightly bigger than the rescue rig itself and is easy to follow. Since it is folded several times, one will definitely fold it back the wrong way instead like a large map Cheesy

A random instruction page showing a technique used to turn a 4 stud wide vehicle to a 5 stud wide vehicle.

    THE MINIFIGURE

For this set, the driver of the this rig has a green jacket with 2 large pockets at the front and blue cap and pants. He wears a pair of blue sun glasses and features some facial hair. Looks like a some real tough trucker!

    THE COMPLETED SET

Once completed, the rescue rig is very compact but is full of features. The amount of lights on this rig alone makes it very visible from afar.

Front view of the rescue rig. A large kangaroo bar protects the front of the rescue rig. Two water taps are placed on top of the cab to act as air-horns. It looks like a typical 4 stud wide truck from this angle.

Viewing from the rear, you can see it is 5 stud wide instead of 4 stud wide at the front. A spanner and mallet is located at the very rear of the rig.

A side view of the rig shows the printed "Auto service" brick which is on both sides of the rescue rig. Between the wheels are the white petrol tanks made up of 1x1 bricks. At the center of the truck are the twin exhaust stacks which utilizes the goblet piece for the top.

The rig's rear is packed with features such as a wheel lift to tow away any light vehicles as wells as space to store emergency road markers and warning lights. The warning lights highly visible due to its high position on the rig and large size.

    ACCESSORIES

The accessories for this set includes the spanner, mallet, roadside triangle and roadside arrow.

A TYPICAL DAY ON THE HIGHWAY

On a usual day, the rescue rig will attend to small vehicle breakdowns. The operator of the rig will try to repair the vehicle using the tools he has and at the same time deploy the road markers to warn other road users.

But if the car cannot be fixed, then there is no other option but to tow the car away. First, the operator install the hook under the front of the car. Dun worry, it won't damage the red hot paint.  Wink

Then the operator back up the rig to catch the tow hook....

... and lift the front end of the car.

As the operator packs up, the driver of the red car has to sit in his towed vehicle as there is no place for a passenger inside the rescue rig.

Once everything is ready, its time to head to the nearest workshop!

As the rescue rig passes a container truck, the driver of the red car laments if it is a good idea to bring out his old sports car today.

Once the red car has been sent to the "hospital", its time to head on the road again. There is a report of a broken down container lorry from the Maersk transport company on the highway. As he passes one of the numerous container Maersk container lorry on the road, an old tow truck is following him

Reaching first, our operator tries to repair the giant rig, but the damage is too great. Trying to install the tow hook on a rig like this proves difficult due to how the undercarriage of this truck is constructed. Just then, his competitor arrives. Oh well, have to let this one go though.

Later in the day, he receive a report that the old ambulance has broken down. Again, due to the way the under-carriage of the ambulance, the tow hook can only be fitted to the rear of the ambulance. The ambulance driver is not very keen on having it towed from the rear as it blocks the ambulance's rear door! But atleast it can still be towed. :Smiley

So its off to the hospital for the Legoman and the "hospital" for the ambulance. Another day, another day at work.

    CONCLUSION

Design: 9/10 A simple compact rescue rig with a lot features
Parts: 9/10 Good selection of transparent bricks and printed pieces
Minifigure: 9/10 A typical rough but highly experienced trucker to ply the highways
Playability: 8/10 A tow truck which can only tow light vehicles. You need something bigger for those trucks
Overall: 9/10 Another great design by Lego featuring a new concept to tow away vehicles.
