    Set name: Octan Tanker
    Year Released: 2010
    Number of parts: 221
    Theme: City

    The box

The front of the box showing the Octan tanker with its driver going to refill a petrol kiosk.

The back of the box shows the features of the set, an annoying "HEY!!!" by a pilot and the build which is separated into 2.

    The box contents

This set contains 2 numbered bags, 1 instruction booklet, 1 slightly crumpled sticker sheet (which Lego can never get packing sticker sheets right) and 3 large green pieces which forms the tanker section.

Another look at the sticker sheet. All the Octan logos, number plates and some decals in the prime mover are stickers.

    The minifigure

The driver for the tanker truck wears a blue Octan uniform with the Octan logo and the word 'oil' on his shirt. Octan oil?

    The Finished Octan tanker

Once completed, the Octan tanker is a very long vehicle capable of caryying large amounts of fuel.

The prime mover is typical of any 6-stud wide vehicles in the City line, with a large front grille, number plate and lights. It also has along very wide windscreen. What I find funny is that the driver sits VERY high in the cab. Wing side mirrors are also provided which is an extra plus!

The driver will be right at home in his cab; there are features drivers a generation ago will envy! A cup holder, a gear stick, air-conditioning and a nice comfy chair for those long distance trips. It also features doors so that our driver does not need to climb into the cab.

Here is something that made me surprised at the attention to detail Lego sets now have; a small step so that our driver can enter the cab!

The rear of the prime mover is packed with features; yellow and red tap points to show the electrical points to power the trailer, the fuel tanks are made with the SNOT technic and a large fifth wheel to haul along the long tanker.

The long tanker trailer connects to the prime mover using a blue technic pin. Viewing from the top, the tanker has multiple circular 2x2 plates to represent the hatch into the tanker.

The rear of the tanker has a ladder to allow the driver to access the top hatches. The tanker also have rear lights and the truck's number plate.

At the bottom of the tanker is a 'landing gear' to allow the tanker section to stand when it is not being pulled by the prime mover.

On the right side of the tanker is a storage compartment to store the wheel stops....

... while on the other side is a pump and a hose reel to allow our driver to refill any petrol pump.

The petrol pump features the only printed piece in this set. The keypad is a printed 1x2 slope piece with green and red lights.

The play feature is to fill up this "petrol pump" so that other City users can then pump petrol into their vehicles.

Unfortunately the petrol hose at the pump is very stiff and like our smart car driver just found out, the hose is too hard to handle!!

Comparing against a vintage set from 1984

Comparing against a vintage set from 1984, the vehicles in Lego City has become much much larger! Now the drivers of today have much better cabin space compared to his predecessor. Of course, nothing beats the printed door pieces on the old set.

But as a tribute to the old set, TLG used back the small hose reel piece in the new old tanker.

I think I understand paanjang has this kind of feeling when collecting vintage sets...

"We would certainly see LEGO evolves through the years" by comparing similar sets from different years.

Yeah i oso agree, when i was putting up those set for display into boxes and some of my frens helped me and was like a big "WOW" from them. They were really impressed with the design of Lego now comparing wif those vintage sets they used to have.

No doubt to that 'evolves' statement Cheng Fei.  Wink

Nice set Panjang bro and pics. Keep it up with your city and vintage sets.  Cheesy
